Moving a Job server from one PAD to another
Overview
The information in this article is based upon Cognos Planning Contributor version 8.1.
The time may come when you need to move an existing Job Server from one Planning Administration Domain (PAD) to another, whether this be for the purposes of modifying your environments, creating an environment split or perhaps because your PAD has become corrupted. Occasionally you may find that when completing this process you are unable to add the Job Server into your newly created PAD.
Disclaimer: This article contains information on modifying the registry. Modifying the registry can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. We cannot guarantee that problems resulting from modifications to the registry can be solved. Use the information provided at your own risk.
The right way to move a Job Server
In a perfect world your server will not die, your PAD will never become corrupted and you will not "forget" do things the right way, but we should cover the "right way" anyhow.
When you know that you are going to move a Job Server you should always manually remove the Job Server entry from the PAD by using the Contributor Administration Console.
- Navigate to "Job Server Clusters" in the Adminstration Console, expand your job server cluster to locate the desired Job server.
- Right hand click your Job Server and select "Delete Job Server"
Once you have completed these steps the Job Server will be gracefully removed from the PAD datastore.
What if my PAD is deleted or corrupted?
If you have deleted your old PAD without first removing the Job Servers, or your pad got corrupted and you need to create a new one, you do not need to worry about getting the job server disassociated with the pad data store, but the Job Server will still "think" it is associated with a PAD and not allow you to add it to another PAD.
On adding the Job Server you will get an error stating "This Job Server already exists in the Planning Administration Domain as 'SERVERNAME'.
Open Regedit. The information is stored in a registry key on the Job Server at "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Cognos\CER4\PAD". You may find a number of GUID keys listed. Each one is a PAD registration.
NOTE: You should always back up your system prior to editing the registry.
Delete the GUID keys and exit Regedit.
You should now be able to add the Job Server to your new PAD.
